Quzhou Middle School Scholarship Program
As part of its outreach efforts in China, the Children of the Doolittle Raiders inaugurated a scholarship program at Quzhou No. 2 Middle School, in the Zhejiang Province city of Quzhou where many Doolittle Raiders gathered after their daring mission in 1942. The school hosted CDR President Jeff Thatcher during his 2015 visit, and is the alma mater of Zheng Weiyong, a Quzhou author and good friend of the Doolittle Raiders.
Beginning in December 2016, students from Grade Two have participated in an essay-writing competition, with entries focused on the Doolittle Raid and its influence on China in general and on the local community in particular. Participants use various channels to learn about and conduct research on the Raid; then each writes an essay in English of between 500 and 1,000 words. The essays are then judged based upon the participants’ English language proficiency, history and perspective. CDR awards modest cash awards to the winners and certificates to all participants in acknowledgment of their achievements.
In 2018 12 essays were submitted by #2 Quzhou Middle School Students in the 2018 annual contest for The Doolittle Raid and Its Impact Upon China. Given the quality of all 12, we opted to award prizes to each of the participants. The prizes, which included cash in American dollars and certificates, were handed out during the CDR China Trip tour visit to the school on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018.
